DRAW Space, Sydney, Australia, April 2024
Dance and drawing performance, movement improvisation, live drawing, music, ink on paper
‘Movement Study’ is a body of work that explores the intersection between dance and drawing, mark-making and choreography. It is a live dance, drawing and performance work where the artist draws the motion of dancers moving across the dance floor. Quick calligraphic marks chase the flows of movement of dance and rhythm. Everything is improvised and intuited. Dancers respond to a playlist they have not previously heard or chosen, whilst the artist too responds through observational drawing that is constantly in flux and in motion. The audience surrounds both artists and dancers, witnessing the impromptu gestures and mark-making across paper and the performance space. After the exhibition opening, a public programming event will be held every two weeks, including a final event on the last day of the show.
This body of work was originally conceived and presented as part of an artist residency at Emerging Islands’ Philippines in 2023. The first live performance of the work in Australia was presented at DRAW Space Sydney in April 2024 but did not have an exhibition or programming component. A new permanent public artwork is currently being produced and commissioned based on the methodologies explored in this performance and will be launched mid 2025 for a new Metro station.
