This work was produced for the A&D Annual Graduate Exhibition at UNSW Galleries and have also been exhibited at the Muswellbrook Art Prize where it was awarded the People’s Choice Award as well as Near and Far at the Narrandera Arts Centre. Having worked from a selfie taken using a smartphone, this self-portrait features the sorts of distortion and spatial flattening that takes place when visualising the human face from the lenses of a phone camera. We can see the evident flattening and distortion as the head and nose are elongated. I wanted to experiment with counterpointing the roundness of the face with the flatness imprinted by the phone camera, to see if I could imitate a sort of depth of field effect.
